Choosing the Perfect Forest Setting
As a Montana wedding officiant I have done ceremonies in all sorts of outdoor locations. Choosing a forest setting as your wedding venue is a fantastic way to anchor your ceremony in a swirl of magnificent sights, delightful sounds and form precious olfactory memories to cherish for all time.
When considering the kind of forest you will visit, think about options such as dense woodlands, open meadows, or a spot that’s near a body of water. As seasons change, the forest changes too, so consider the kinds of trees- whether they retain their color or drop their leaves, and contemplate the vision you want to create: icy, frosty branches, swirling red and brown leaves, new buds and fresh leaves or deep rich piney needles soft underfoot.
Finally, be aware that National Parks, National Forests, State Parks and State Forests each have unique permitting requirements and you need to do your research before you set your heart on a certain spot to be sure it is available and appropriate for your ceremony.
Décor and Theme Ideas
As you begin to consider the details of your ceremony, explore eco-friendly decor ideas that partner with the natural beauty of the forest. The perk of a forest setting as your wedding venue is that most of the decorating has been been done for you through the splendor of nature! You can augment this by bringing fancy floral touches to your outfits, a blanket or ground covering for a small picnic or to mark your ceremony site, and even create a tiny scene inside your ring box, to mimic the outdoors.

Another consideration, if carrying a bouquet or wearing corsages, etc., is to work with a local grower whose plants and flowers will naturally be in season and fit your theme with the area’s bloom cycle. Some folks I recommend in northwest Montana are:
